Dr Susanne Döpke , with her research in this field, is a renowned expert in enlightening families with the needs of raising bilingual or multilingual children in a multicultural society. She is a German background speech pathologist living in Australia. Susanne specializes in language acquisition, bilingualism and cross-cultural communication. Her PhD thesis focuses on what parents can do to ensure that their child will become successful in speaking the home language. She has various published books and articles in this field. Using parents as a resource The purpose of this half-hour presentation is to help *LOTE / Language teachers capitalise on parents' willingness to support their children's learning of a language other than English. The talk will address the specific needs of *NESB parents and their children, suggest ways in which teachers can advise parents on language maintenance, outline strategies for involving parents in follow-up work and for supporting the language goals of NESB families. How to be a language resource for your child The purpose of this half-hour presentation is to help parents' understand the role they play in helping their children making progress with LOTE. Susanne will make suggestions regarding making LOTE activities fun and rewarding for children, how to turn English homework into LOTE extensions, and the importance of maintaining contact with teachers. *LOTE - Languages Other Than English *NESB - Non English Speaking Background *********

Nejat Akdere, a Melbourne University graduate Turkish background teacher at Greater Shepparton Secondary College, Victorian School of Languages and the secretary of the Goulburn Valley Chinese Association, would like share his experiences growing up bilingually and how he is trying to raise a multilingual child by utilising Turkish, Chinese and English spoken at home. He will be the moderator of the webinar. He intends to make this webinar as interactive as possible. He will set up break out rooms to specific language groups so that attendees can reflect on webinar topics and share their experiences with each other in their mother tongue. ![]() Presenter
Antonella Cicero, an Italian background former teacher, area manager of Victorian School of Languages, would like to share her experiences and talk about what can be done to enhance bilingualism at language schools and in various organisations that provide services to children of culturally and linguistically diverse families. |
